Communication is hard work, and not only for those divided by language or dialect, but even speakers of the same tongue. Sermon translation is even harder work for at least two reasons:
  1. Abstraction. The Bible's subject matter is never singular in meaning; a story is being told by a human author, but a metanarrative is being told by the editor in chief -- God himself. A good sermon carefully discerns and translates the humanity and divinity of the text from the ancient into the modern. A good translator helps that sermon take its next huge step into another foreign environment.
  2. The stakes. Giving reliable directions to the nearest panaderia is important, but giving reliable directions to the Bread of Life is mission-critical. The stakes are very different, and weigh heavily on a responsible translator.
  1. What foreign languages are represented in your community?
  2. Don't forget ASL. American Sign Language is a critical communication tool for millions of people who are deaf and hard of hearing. Don't neglect these people. More information about ASL.
