Sermon to Website

The Big Idea. Website design has come a long way. Platforms like WordPress and similar tools make web design almost as easy as creating a Microsoft Word document. (Populating that website, however, is something else, but we'll get to that later.)

You know you need a website, but where to start?
  1. Choose internet-friendly name. Recognize that names like Westminster, Cornerstone, or Good Shepherd are very crowded brands in the internet world; many churches have these names and they have a tough time distinguishing themselves to new people. Whatever you choose, remember that you want this name to be memorable, concise, and consistent across all the complementary social media platforms you plan to build out. If your church is SampleChurch.com, make sure you first can reserve Facebook.com/SampleChurch, Twitter.com/SampleChurch, Instagram.com/SampleChurch, and so forth. Make your brand as easy and predictable as possible for your existing and future members.
  2. Choose a team. You not only want to think about who can build and maintain your website, but who can populate it. Web designers and coders often like to stay in the lane of cool design and tricks, and not so much the editorial work of writing, photography, or videography.
  3. Choose a platform. If your church has coders who want to design a website from the ground up, just remember to have a succession strategy in place for the time when those coders move on to something else. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with a plane with no pilots. Today, most churches use platforms like Wordpress, SquareSpace, Wix, and others to build a website because of the ease of building and maintenance.
  1. Choose a website development team.
  2. Choose a production team of writers, editors, photographers, and videographers.
  3. Choose a website- and social media-friendly brand for your church.
  4. Choose a website platform.
